The Socratic Exploration of Pedagogy

The Teacher and the Stranger (2004)

I taught Ninth Grade English at a Junior High School in a small town in North Carolina where the foothills of the Appalachians met the flat lands of the piedmont. I taught there for four school years. In the meantime, I studied pedagogy, or the art and science of teaching. I had not even heard the word “pedagogy” before I read it allowed and mispronounced it to my county-wide supervisor at central office. So, I taught all day in this small friendly town, and in the evenings I attended masters courses in Education at Western Carolina University. It was during this time that I wrote The Teacher and the Stranger.
